Actual Polish speaker here!
Ah, well… yes, people do say Polish is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Of course, they probably have never tried to learn Finnish or Hungarian, lol.
Polish has 3 genders, 7 cases, and each verb comes in a perfective or imperfective form. And there are loads of exceptions to… everything. It’s also pretty hard to pronounce for those who don’t speak another Slavic language. (Or Mandarin, strangely enough…)
That being said – Yes of course it can be learned! It will take a lot more effort than an audio tape, and you pretty much must have a neighbor/friend/acquaintance to show you proper pronunciation. It probably won’t be easy, to be perfectly honest, I can’t imagine learning Polish were it not my first language. However, it can be done! I go to an American university, and one of 2 Polish professors here is actually American. I’ve never heard an American with absolutely 0 accent before. It’s actually kind of scary.
If you can learn grammatical Polish and speak it without an accent — all people of both genders will be swept off their feet! ^^
I know it sounds hard, but the end result would be worth it. I’d say, go for it!
And Polish tongue twisters make for excellent party tricks, trust me.
Try spitting out "Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie w Szczebrzeszynie, a Szczebrzeszyn z tego słynie" works every time.
They did an interview with a priest from Poland who was the parish priest in a neighborhood of Boston. He said that Polish is such an extremely difficult language that his years of study in the language had in no way made him great at writing it. Apparently the grammar is complex-or so the priest and the other interviewees thought. In fact the whole article was about the difficulty of Polish. It was in the Boston Globe and man it was a couple of decades ago.
Still I’ll bet dollars to donuts that if you can find actual Polish speaking people to converse with you will make real progress.
Polish is incredibly difficult. Lust is not a good enough reason to learn it. Yes, you can learn a few phrases, but to speak it well without sounding like an uneducated cretin will takes years and years of intensive learning.
