This question is for those who speak Polish. I grew up pronouncing the last name "Lonczak" as Lawn-zack. But someone told me that in Polish, they pronounce the 'cz' with a 'ch' sound, such as the word *chair*. is this true? and if so, have we been pronouncing the name wrong all of these years? i'm very curious, thanks in advance.

i am concerned because every thing else is written in Polish. How can i make sure that it is not expired?

I'm getting started on writing a research paper on the Polish Solidarity movement that was instrumental in helping Poland break away from the Soviet Union.

Does anyone have any good primary sources on the topic, maybe speeches by Walesa or other things of the nature? For example, I know Walesa addressed Congress in 1989 (through a translator); anyone know of a PDF file of the text of his speech?

Anything and everything would be of help. The further into the movement, i.e. further into the 80s, the better, but again I'll appreciate anything.

I'm a Polish-American, born in the USA. I know we have a recommended list of books to study and go through for high school students here. Are there any books in particular that Polish students rummage through? Particularly in the Polish language?

(besides possibly meaning people from Chechnya?) It could be spelled very differently from chechens, but sounds something like that. My sister had a dream in which our Dad, who died a couple years ago, yelled "remember the chechens." He spoke only Polish as a little boy.

I bought a lovely picture book about Washington talking to a Polish soldier at Valley Forge as the soldier lit a candle for Hanukkah. The editor notes said that Washington later said he was familiar with the holiday because of this incident, but it cannot be verified through Washington's own notes.

It's a nice book, whether true or not, but I'd like to know if it's a true story or a lovely wartime tale.

Hey, I go to the University of Memphis, and they have a great selection of languages to choose from. However, I really would like to take Polish, and, unfortunatly, they do not offer that. So, does anyone know of a college that offers online Polish courses that will x-fer the credits over to Memphis? Also, if you guys do know of one do you know about how much it would cost? I know everyone thinks French women are so sophisticated but the ones I've met don't eat ANYTHING and are really miserable about it. The Dutch I've met talk a lot and the German ones can be quite rude. Also, the British women I know seem to be either overly enthusiastic or just downright mousy.

When I was watching "Borat", I recognized the Polish words for "hello" and "thank you". I think this is kind of strange, since the languages that are spoken in Kazakhstan are Kazakh and Russian. Also, I know that the Russian words for "hello" and "thank you" are different from the Polish ones.
